STEELPAN COMPETITIONS

National Panorama

National Panorama steelpan competition Trinidad's National Panorama is the most prestigious steelpan competition in the world, held annually in Trinidad and Tobago during the Carnival season. Established in 1963, Panorama has grown to become one of the key highlights of Carnival, drawing thousands of spectators and participants from around the globe.

Competition Structure

Panorama features different categories based on the size of the steelband:

Large Bands: These bands typically consist of over 100 players, offering a grand, multi-layered sound.

Medium Bands: These bands range between 50-75 players, providing a slightly smaller but equally impressive performance.

Small Bands: These are smaller ensembles that offer more intimate but still vibrant interpretations of the music.

Preliminary Rounds

The competition kicks off in January with preliminary rounds, where steelbands from across Trinidad and Tobago compete within their regions. These preliminaries are held at various panyards (the home bases of steelbands) and feature live performances of intricate, custom-arranged songs, usually based on soca or calypso hits. Judges visit each panyard to score the bands.

Semi-Finals (“Savannah Party”)

The semi-finals, also known as Savannah Party, take place at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain. This is a major event in the Carnival season, with thousands of fans gathering to support their favorite bands. The semi-finals are a massive street party, blending the excitement of competition with the energy of Carnival revelry.

Finals

The Panorama Finals are held the Saturday before Carnival Monday at Queen’s Park Savannah, with the top steelbands from each category performing their final arrangements. The bands typically perform original arrangements of popular soca or calypso songs, which are sometimes as long as 10 minutes. Each performance is a complex musical narrative, showcasing not only the virtuosity of the players but also the creativity of the arrangers. Winning the Panorama competition is a coveted honor, and bands vie for the title all year long.

Junior Panorama

The Junior Panorama competition is held annually in the lead-up to Carnival, encouraging young talent to engage with and preserve the steelpan tradition. Schools and youth steelbands compete in this event, and it serves as an important platform for the next generation of pan players. Junior Panorama ensures that steelpan music continues to thrive and evolve as younger players learn the instrument and compete in a formal setting.

Single Pan Band Competition

In addition to large and medium steelbands, Trinidad also hosts the Single Pan Band competition, where smaller steelbands featuring fewer players compete. These bands play one pan per musician, emphasizing the technical skill of the players. It’s a more intimate competition compared to Panorama but equally exciting.

Pan Is Beautiful

Pan Is Beautiful steelpan competition Unlike the fast-paced, calypso-focused Panorama, this competition focused on classical music, test pieces, and tunes of choice, demanding high technical skill and musical versatility.

Originating from earlier steelband music festivals, it was renamed Pan is Beautiful in the 1980s, and became a cornerstone of Trinidad and Tobago’s musical calendar. The last competition was held in 2013. The famous Codrington Pan Family took first place, Invaders Steel Orchestra came second, and Couva Joylanders Steel Orchestra placed third.

The festival was reintroduced in 2024 and renamed Steelpan is More Beautiful. There were three finals in three different categories: single pan (20-25 musicians), ensemble (10-15 musicians), and orchestra (35-50 musicians, including the rhythm section). Each category was required to perform two songs: a test piece and tune of choice.

The test piece for the ensemble was David Rudder’s Oil and Music. The test for the single pan was Rudder's Engine Room, and for the orchestras, it is his Dedication. The competition takes place in August (Steelpan History Month), and culminates the week after World Steelpan Day.

World Steelpan Festival

World Steelpan Festival World Steelpan Festival is a commemoration of Trinidad and Tobago's strength and resilience as a people and a nation. The inaugural Festival took place through a series of vibrant events in Trinidad from August 5-11, 2024, culminating in World Steelpan Day celebrations on August 11.

The Pan in the 21st Century and Pan Down Memory Lane events started as concerts in 1998 and were later changed to competitions. The events were also decoupled from the National Panorama steelband events and placed later in the year to stand on their own merit. To raise the standard of the performances, substantial rule changes were implemented. As these events evolved they also influenced changes to the National Panorama events.

These competitions were part of an initiative by Pan Trinbago to diversify the activities of the steelbands away from the National Panorama focus. with the aim of creating more steelpan events that would have the steelbands more active throughout the entire year.
